Corps set to finish investigation at former bombing range

An investigation into “possible hazards or contamination” at a former bombing range in Horry County is expected to be finished this month and the findings will soon become public, officials said.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers began the research in 2015 at the former Conway Bombing and Gunnery Range, an expanse of thousands of acres that includes part of Carolina Forest.

The area was used by the U.S. Army as a range between 1942 and 1947. Pilots practiced bombing, strafing and rocket firing on the property. Last week, a World War II era bomb was found on a Carolina Forest construction site.
