Mount Umunhum: Big crowds, five times more than expected, flock to newly opened Bay Area summit

For generations, hikers, bicyclists and motorists looking for a sweeping view have ventured up the Bay Area’s most distinctive and popular peaks: Mount Diablo, Mount Tamalpais and Mount Hamilton.

Now there’s a new member in the popular summit club. Mount Umunhum, a former 1950s-era Air Force radar station in the hills south of San Jose that was opened to the public last September, has seen a booming numbers of visitors — roughly five times as many as planners originally expected.

Interest in the 3,486-foot peak, which takes its name from the Ohlone Indian word for hummingbird, has been so passionate that visitation for the first year is on pace to be nearly half that of Mount Diablo, the regal Contra Costa County mountain that opened as a state park in 1921, and equal to all of the cars that drive every year over the summit of Mount Hamilton in Santa Clara County.
