Air Force takes soil to landfill, monitors site

HEATH -- Cleanup of a decades-old contamination at the former Newark Air 
Force Base soon will be finished, and the land available for development 
or greenspace

The U.S. Air Force expects to finish the $2 million project this month, 
with 7,500 tons of contaminated soil removed and new monitoring wells 
installed to determine water quality at the Central Ohio Aerospace and 
Technology Center location.

Peter Forbes, the Air Force project manager and an environmental 
engineer, said the three-quarter of an acre site included 
trichloroethene, a known carcinogen left from solvents stored there 
during the 1970s and 1980s.
