Camp Edwards: A search for new cleanup methods

CAMP EDWARDS - They've tried putting contaminated soil through the spin
cycle. They've tried cooking it, too. And they've even tried using
potato peels left over from making Cape Cod Potato Chips.
As part of the massive cleanup of polluted soil and the groundwater at
the Massachusetts Military Reservation, officials haven't been afraid to
experiment, said Benjamin Gregson, remediation manager for the Army's
Impact Area Groundwater Study Program.
The potato peels were tried in 2005, but didn't make the cut as a
lasting approach because it would have taken too many to do the job,
Gregson said.
The idea was to create compost, using the peels and leftovers from
cranberries crushed to make juice, that would naturally filter
perchlorate and Royal Dutch Explosives contaminating soil at the base.
