Ft. Slocum a memory as cleanup nears end

NEW ROCHELLE - A quick boat ride across Long Island Sound leads to
Davids Island, the home of Fort Slocum, a former military base from the
Civil War until the 1960s. In the decades since, the uninhabited island
possessed a ghost-like quality chock-full of military history.

"We used to call that place 'paradise 8 feet above sea level,' " said
Michael Cavanaugh, a Los Angeles resident who grew up on the island.
"Many people I've talked to who used to live there wish they could go
back and relive their memories there."

But now that won't be possible. The Army Corps of Engineers is close to
finishing the entire cleanup of the island, leaving little to no
physical remnants of the historic military base.

Spearheaded by Rep. Nita Lowey, D-Harrison, in 2004, the city requested
that the Corps of Engineers demolish the military base because it could
not afford the costly alternative of preserving it. The Corps of
Engineers began the cleanup in 2005 and will be finished next month,
almost four years ahead of schedule.
