6 Atlantic, Cape day cares located on, near contaminated sites

GALLOWAY TOWNSHIP - Krista Belber was wondering what to tell the 
parents. Whether the children should be drinking bottled water.

Whether to panic.

A reporter's phone call Thursday was Berber's first news that her day 
care, The First Years, is located on a property listed by the state 
Department of Environmental Protection as contaminated.

Belber had heard about Kiddie Kollege in Franklinville, Gloucester 
County, where 20 children had tested positive for high levels of mercury 
after attending day care in a building that was a former thermometer 
factory.

But she never dreamed her day care, located at the Smithville Town 
Center in Galloway Township, Atlantic County, might also pose a danger 
to its young charges.

The state is now requiring day care operators to check with DEP to 
determine whether their location, and any property within a 400-foot 
radius, is listed as a "known contaminated site." But how many 
already-licensed day-care centers are toxic?
