Katrina's effects on environment sometimes surprising

A year ago, Katrina wreaked havoc on many aspects of life in South 
Mississippi. Often concern for the environment and our natural resources 
took a back seat to the immediacy of rescue, relief and recovery. But, 
as so often happens even when there is not calamity swirling around a 
place, the direct relationship is forgotten between environment and 
public health, resources and economic health.

FEMA trailers and illness-inducing formaldehyde. Storm debris and 
untreated sewage decaying in the waterways. Debate about 
Katrina-deposited toxic sludge. Ten billion board feet of commercial 
timber blown down and not a local oyster to be seen. Asbestos taking 
wind when structures are crushed to the ground.

But with the year-mark passed, the natural world - like people - heals 
with time.
