TRENTON | New environmental regulations prompted by a South Jersey day
care center that was allowed to occupy the contaminated site of a former
thermometer factory began chugging through the state legislature Monday.

The process was driven by an acknowledgment that government failed to
protect children from exposure to mercury at the Kiddie Kollege in
Gloucester County.

"This was a catastrophic failure of checks and balances at all levels of
government," said Assemblyman David Mayer, D-Gloucester Township.
"Through this legislation, we want to close any loopholes, tighten it up
and make sure this never happens again."

contaminated sites advanced in the state Legislature on Monday, picking
up bipartisan support and the endorsement of the Corzine administration.

"Today, we take steps to assure this situation never occurs again," said
Assemblyman David Mayer, a Democrat whose district includes the
Gloucester County day-care center allowed to operate for two years in an
old thermometer factory.
