Poisoned brownfields get a new lease on life

City puts money on the table to prompt development of former industrial 
sties

Workers have toiled for months to get rid of about 1,955 tonnes of dirt 
contaminated with diesel fuel from the site of the former Arrow Shirt 
factory at 112 Benton St. in the downtown.

Lots of heavy equipment was needed to remove soil down to a depth of 
nine metres, and then replace it with clean fill.

It is one of the biggest projects of its kind currently underway in the 
region -- the cleanup of an old factory, and its conversion to 
residential housing. The heritage building will be saved, and during the 
first phase of the project four floors of condos with 150 units will be 
built on top of the existing factory.
