What Trump’s order ignores about the Presidio: It’s a gem of government efficiency

WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump can do very little to dismantle the Presidio Trust, experts told the Chronicle. And any moves Trump does make to shrink or interfere with the trust would run contrary to one of his primary goals: saving the federal government money.

The Presidio is one of the most efficiently run agencies in the federal government, and it is entirely self-sufficient in its operations and finances.

The executive order Trump signed Wednesday called for eliminating the components and functions of the trust not outlined in federal law, and reducing “statutory functions and associated personnel to the minimum presence and function required by law.”

The Presidio Trust has already done that, former board chair John Keker told the Chronicle. “They have lowered their federal footprint to what Congress told them to do, which is, ‘Pay for yourself, don’t bother us.’ And they did a good job doing that.”
