Report reveals deep fractures under radioactive Ohio land

PIKE COUNTY, Ohio - On a 100-acre section of land northeast of the closed Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant (PORTS), mammoth trucks and front-end loaders are busy digging and filling a $650 million landfill with radioactive and hazardous waste.
The contents already include debris from the demolition of buildings, cut-up and crushed equipment, and contaminated soil, part o f multi-billion-dollar cleanup of the closed, Cold War-era facility that enriched uranium for America’s nuclear power plants and its atom bombs.
When completed and capped in 2030, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) insists that the cutting-edge landfill will seal in the radioactive and toxic trash for up to a thousand years. But Billy Spencer, mayor of the nearby Village of Piketon, says that there were cracks in the DOE's argument from the time the landfill was proposed.
