Michigan invokes new dispute with Air Force over Wurtsmith cleanup

LANSING, MI — It’s déjà vu all over again.
The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy (EGLE) has initiated another legal dispute with the U.S. Air Force over its compliance with a state law governing the cleanup of PFAS chemicals at the former Wurtsmith air base.
The state, which has long struggled to exercise oversight of the military-led cleanup in Oscoda, invoked a new dispute on Oct. 8alleging that the Air Force is moving ahead with a new treatment system plan this year under the wrong state environmental law.
Instead of monitoring a new interim treatment system’s ability to remediate ‘forever chemical’ pollution by testing where a groundwater plume enters nearby Van Etten Lake, the Air Force wants to test clean water where it discharges underground.
