Amid growing environmental concerns, Salina City has embarked on a pioneering journey to confront the presence of Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) within its boundaries. With the Salina Regional Airport at the heart of contamination worries, stemming from its past as the Schilling Air Force Base, the city's proactive stance in 2024 marks a significant chapter in its environmental management efforts. Spearheaded by Martha Tasker, the director of utilities, the initiative is not just about addressing the past but safeguarding Salina's future.
As part of the city's resolve, an ambitious testing program has been rolled out, targeting 29 different PFAS chemicals. Tasker, with a blend of anticipation and responsibility, highlighted the structured approach to this endeavor. Testing will be conducted quarterly throughout the year, with results from the initial phase expected imminently. This systematic data collection is pivotal, offering insights that will guide not only remediation strategies but also public health policies.
