Among the informative technical sessions at the (November 28-December 1) 2023 Defense Department environmental Innovation Symposium
(https://www.dodinnovationsymposium.org <https://www.dodinnovationsymposium.org/> ) is a Friday, December 1 session on PFAS Pollution Prevention. The online program describes it:

"PFAS Pollution Prevention
Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) have recently become the subject of environmental and health scrutiny. Additionally, 3M has announced the elimination of more than 15,000 PFAS chemicals by 2025. DoD weapons systems and platforms will be impacted by the lack of availability and current, future, and potential regulations. PFAS usage in the military includes electronics, explosives and explosives processing, pyrotechnics, high temperature and durable materials for munitions components, advanced coatings, clothing and textiles, refrigeration, and cabin fire suppressants. This session will explore alternatives to PFAS in these applications as well as assessments of their alternatives regarding properties, performance, toxicity, and environmental impact.”

The mention of 3M piqued my interest. I found a 3M description of its PFAS production phase-out at https://pfas.3m.com/pfas_uses <https://pfas.3m.com/pfas_uses> .

There are other sessions about PFAS at the Symposium.
