The town council formally has asked its congressional delegation to develop a plan with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers that would accomplish a comprehensive restoration of Gould Island beyond the current scope.
The councilors unanimously endorsed the resolution at their meeting Monday. The resolution requests for the delegation, which includes U.S. Sen. Jack Reed, a Jamestown resident, to develop, finance and execute a plan needed for the southern 39 acres to be deemed safe for public recreation.
Under the current scope of the cleanup, the corps is responsible for remediation to make the property suitable for breeding birds because the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management operates those 39 acres as a wildlife sanctuary. That agency, however, has expanded its plans to include camping for humans on the land. The town council also showed its support by adopting a resolution in 2019 that called for a chemical decontamination to allow for “public recreation.”
