NJCU opens Fort Monmouth campus, makes Oceanport a university town

OCEANPORT - With the opening of New Jersey City University's satellite campus, the borough is now a university town. 

The ribbon cutting for the campus' renovated Squier Hall building, located on the old Fort Monmouth grounds, was held Wednesday. Classes start Sept. 1.

In a nod to the military history of the fort, which at one time served as the base of the Signal Corps, the university maintained the corps insignia of two flags crossed and a gold torch on its façade.

The 76,000-square-foot building, which was finished in 1935 and originally called the Signal Corps Laboratories, now houses NJCU's "state-of-the-art nursing education center," as NJCU's President Susan Henderson put it.
