Most RAB meeting attendees pleased with progress at Wurtsmith

OSCODA – Much work remains before the per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) contamination at the former Wurtsmith Air Force Base (WAFB) in Oscoda can be fully rectified. And while some past gatherings of the Wurtsmith Restoration Advisory Board (RAB) have resulted in heated exchanges with Air Force (AF) representatives, that was not case during the latest RAB meeting.

Several participants of the virtual event said they are pleased with not only the progress being made on the WAFB cleanup, but also that they appreciate how the relationship between the AF and the community has shifted in a more positive direction.

Not everyone was of this same opinion, though, such as RAB member Joe Maxwell. He said it’s been 15 years since they’ve known about the pollution and how bad it is. And, while there has been plenty of talking going on, it doesn’t seem that the progress is moving very fast. “And I think a lot of members of the community feel the same way as this.”
