Virginia, EPA to recoup nearly $64 million in cleanup costs for Portsmouth Superfund site

After years of wrangling over who should pay to clean up a Superfund site on the Southern Branch of the Elizabeth River, a proposed settlement would reimburse Virginia and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency nearly $64 million.
The site includes nearly 50 acres of industrialized waterfront and more than 30 acres of river sediment that were contaminated for decades by Atlantic Wood Industries, a wood-treating facility, and for several years by the U.S. Navy.
On Friday, officials announced a consent decree filed in federal court that directs the U.S. Department of Defense and the Navy to pay Virginia $8.5 million in remedial costs and the EPA $55.3 million. They also will pay $1.5 million for oyster restoration in the river.
