Three eastern Connecticut rivers will be tested this summer for PFAS chemical pollution

Connecticut officials have chosen three rivers in the eastern part of the state to be tested this summer for contamination by the potentially hazardous chemical compounds known as PFAS.

The Natchaug, Quinebaug and Pawcatuck Rivers were picked for special testing because all three are close to “known or suspected PFAS sources,” Lee Sawyer, spokesman for the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection said Thursday.

PFAS has become a high-profile concern in Connecticut since the June 8 spill of tens of thousands of gallons of firefighting foam containing those chemicals that reached the Farmington River in Windsor. Gov. Ned Lamont has created a state task force to study the pollution issue and recommend new laws, regulations and procedures to protect health and safety and the environment from PFAS.
