The task force described in the linked article (https://www.mcclatchydc.com/news/nation-world/national/national-security/article233063112.html) is a step forward, but it’s not enough.

About two years ago I unsuccessfully suggested to Maureen Sullivan, Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Environment, that DOD form a national multi-stakeholder dialogue to work through policy issues associated with the military’s use and release into the environment of PFAS chemicals. I noted growing community interest at many current and former Defense installations across the country.

Back in the 1990s, the Defense Department participated in the Federal Facilities Environmental Restoration Dialogue Committee, and it sponsored the National Dialogue on Military Munitions. Both dialogues brought together diverse interests to make constructive, productive recommendations. It’s past time for a PFAS dialogue!
