A press conference held Wednesday sought to bring the issues of the Camp Lejeune water contamination back in the public’s eye.

Allen Thomas held the press conference at the Freedom Fountain in downtown Jacksonville. Thomas is running in the special election on Sept. 10 to fill the open North Carolina 3rd Congressional District seat following the death of Rep. Walter B. Jones Jr. on Feb. 10. Thomas, the Democratic candidate, will run against Republican Gregory Murphy, Libertarian Tim Harris, and Constitution Party candidate Greg Holt in the upcoming special election.

Thomas stood at the podium flanked by Jerry Ensminger and his daughter, Jessica Ensminger. Master Sgt. Jerry Ensminger served in the Marine Corps Master for 25 years as a drill instructor. His daughter, Janey, died at age 9 of leukemia in 1985 due to the contamination tap water in Camp Lejeune.

The contamination affected service members, their families, and base workers who lived and used the water aboard Camp Lejeune between the 1950s and 1980s, causing some to develop various diseases that ranged from leukemia to lymphoma.
