Newburgh residents unsatisfied after PFOS meeting with military officials

For more than two and a half years, federal officials have been missing from all the public meetings and press conferences held since Newburgh closed its primary water supply due to PFOS contamination and the state identified Stewart Air National Guard Base as the source of the toxic chemical.
Their absence ended Thursday when U.S. Department of Defense and Air Force officials toured the base, met with state, county and local officials about the contamination and then answered questions during a public forum at the Newburgh Armory Unity Center.
Robert McMahon, the DoD’s assistant secretary of defense for sustainment, said the military has been following a rigid environmental cleanup process defined by federal law and has also faced spending restrictions because Stewart is not an active-duty base and is located on state-owned land.
