Newburgh’s contaminated water may go back years before PFOS issue surfaced

NEWBURGH – Long before the New York Air National Guard occupied its current base at Stewart Airport, the entire airport was an Air Force base dating back to the Army Air Corp days of World War II.
Drums of chemicals were reported to have been buried there for years and in fact, when the Air Guard moved from Westchester County Airport to Stewart in the mid-1980s, one reporter observed men in environmental hazard mitigation suits removing drums from trenches and placing them in trucks.
A March 4, 1992 letter from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to the Air Force requested “whatever inspections or investigations necessary to reasonably prove or disprove the allegation.”
