Airport soars again

We salute the remarkable growth of the San Bernardino International Airport and its commitment to disaster preparedness.
When Secretary of Defense Frank C. Carlucci’s commission ordered the closure of Norton Air Force Base in 1988, it was a huge blow to the regional economy — especially coming soon after Kaiser Steel Mill declared bankruptcy in Fontana.
The airport and the mill grew into major military operations during World War II. The air base expanded greatly after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. Kaiser Steel — now the site of the Fontana Speedway — became the largest steel mill in the nation.
