Horsham applies for open space from U.S. Navy

Horsham Council approved Monday an application for the transfer of eight acres of open space from the former Willow Grove air base to the township.
Eight acres of open space owned by the U.S. Navy on Easton Road could be added to the Horsham parks department in the near future. When, exactly, that will happen depends on how quickly the federal government can approve the request.
Horsham Council got the approval process started Monday when it voted in favor of preparing a public benefit conveyance application for the land. Like eating an elephant, getting to the finish line takes one step at a time, said township manager Bill Walker.
“There’s a lot of paperwork, especially since it involves the federal government,” said Walker, on Tuesday. “We’re dealing with parkland and open space, so the Navy has to convey it to the Department of the Interior, which will refer it to the National Park Service. We reached out to the Navy today, and they could only verbally say they are supportive of the idea.”
