Public meeting Tuesday on Barstow area water pollution

BARSTOW - Water regulators are planning a public meeting Tuesday here about perchlorate and nitrate pollution in a sparsely populated nearby community.
The discovery of the perchlorate problem at this location in 2010 caused then Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger to declare a state of emergency because the toxic chemical had entered the city’s water supply.
The immediate problem was resolved when Golden State Water Co. took one well - used to supply Barstow’s water - off-line and used other wells to fill the void, Golden State officials say.
But the plume of perchlorate has continued to grow and has merged with underground nitrate contamination caused by the city of Barstow’s wastewater treatment plant, said Cindi Mitton, a senior engineer with the Lahontan Regional Water Quality Control Board.
