Navy to hold drinking water information meeting in Chesapeake

CHESAPEAKE, Va. -- Residents that live near Naval Auxiliary Landing Field (NALF) Fentress, as well as others interested, are invited to attend a public information meeting that will discuss the Navy's plan to sample drinking water from private wells near the facility.
The test will be conducted to determine if the water contains any perfluorinated compounds (PCFs). This comes after the Navy used fire-fighting foam that contained PCFs in past training activities on NALF Fentress.
Navy installations across the country started testing on-base drinking water wells for the presence of PCFs in December. The compounds were used in several products, starting in the 1950s, for their stain and water-repellent properties, including the foam the Navy used to train sailors in fighting aircraft fires at sea and ashore.
