Official: Progress made to rein in jet fuel contamination

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - A massive plume of jet fuel that was threatening drinking water wells at the edge of Albuquerque is now shrinking, according to state environment officials.

An extraction well has removed more than 13 million gallons of contaminated water over the past six months. Another 5,000 tons of soil have been removed from the site at Kirtland Air Force Base since cleanup began two years ago, and more than a half-million gallons of contamination have been sucked from beneath the surface using a vapor-extraction system.

First detected in 1999, the leak at a fueling station at Kirtland Air Force Base was believed to have been seeping into the ground for decades. Estimates of the amount of fuel spilled have ranged from 6 million to 24 million gallons.

A pump-and-treat system began operating in July, and officials have plans to bring online two more extraction wells online in December. More monitoring and extraction wells are planned next year.
