Radford ammunition plant seeks fresh permit for controversial open burning

The Radford Army Ammunition Plant is asking to renew its permit for its controversial open burning ground.

Filed June 12, the 449-page application is to undergo an 18- to 24-month review by the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality, which must eventually decide what limits to set on a waste disposal practice that has drawn increased criticism in recent years.

Public hearings and a new assessment of the risks of pollutants traveling off-site from the open burning are ahead, state regulators said last week. And the process could jumpstart the first air quality testing around the waste fires, with a drone flying above the blazes to collect samples, said Leslie Romanchik, the hazardous waste program manager in DEQ’s Office of Waste Permitting and Compliance.
