RIVERBANK -- Ten acres at the Army ammunition plant on Claus Road could
be sold to developers by the end of the year, an important first step in
bringing new jobs and businesses to the area, city officials say.
At a meeting in Sacramento last week, Army officials agreed to consider
transferring part of the 173-acre ammo plant out of Army hands as soon
as possible. Ten acres on the plant's southern edge could be transferred
before March 2010, said Mark Jones of the Army's Base Realignment and
Closure program. City officials are hopeful that the transfer could
happen sooner, by late this year.
That's good news for Riverbank. The sooner the plant moves out of Army
hands, the sooner the city can usher in the plant's rebirth as a hub for
green jobs and businesses.
