Ranchers, developers condemn Laughlin-protective legislation

"There's none of us in here that wants to see Laughlin move," asserted 
Darrell Hargrove, rancher, livestock transporter, and developer, 
Wednesday night (Jan. 14).  But he urged City of Del Rio-Val Verde 
County Joint Airport Zoning Board members to consider landowner rights 
as paramount in importance.

If a base does close, Hargrove said, "It's not the end of the world," 
citing Eagle Pass and other communities that - over time - have survived 
economically even as local military installations vanished.  Hargrove's 
comments arose from longstanding personal fears about erosions of 
private property rights, and the potential he sees in legislation being 
sponsored in the Texas house and senate to do just that.
