Flammable vapors stifle Pease jet fuel cleanup project

PORTSMOUTH - The Pease International Tradeport looks like a pristine, 
well laid out, environmentally friendly industrial park, with its 
Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design-certified buildings, and 
tree-lined parking and buffer areas.

However, scratch the surface in several areas of the property and the 
remnants of a military air base that cared little for its impact on 
surrounding communities comes bubbling up.

One of those areas is just beneath the airport flight line where the Air 
Force had installed a jet fueling system in the early 1950s. Over its 
years of operation, the system began to leak, spewing quantities of jet 
fuel into the surrounding soils.
