Salina seeks control of groundwater cleanup

Sometime later this year, a coalition of Salina public entities will 
decide whether to accept a check -- a really large check -- and, in 
exchange, assume responsibility for cleaning up contamination from the 
former Schilling Air Force Base.

How large the check will be isn't settled. The local entities -- the 
city of Salina, the Salina School District, Kansas State University at 
Salina and the Salina Airport Authority -- have one number in mind, 
while the federal government, which currently is responsible for the 
cleanup, has another.

"It's a lot of money," was all that Tim Rogers, executive director of 
the airport authority, would say Tuesday about the figure. "The goal is 
to receive a settlement that funds a 30-year work plan. I'm confident we 
will get that."
