Holland approves $2.8M brownfield reimbursement to advance housing plan

HOLLAND - Holland City Council unanimously approved a $2.8 million brownfield reimbursement agreement Wednesday, Feb. 6, for the construction of hundreds of apartment units.

The proposal to amend the brownfield plan was submitted by SJR Development LLC for property at 2123 Sherwood Ave. and 1884 M-40 for eligible costs reimbursable up to $2.8 million plus local administrative costs. Most of the money will go toward constructing a new main street at the Kensington Place development that will connect to M-40.

Brownfield status applies to properties where redevelopment or reuse is complicated by the presence or potential presence of a hazardous substance, pollutant or contaminant. Metals were found at the property in concentrations exceeding Michigan Department of Environmental Quality cleanup criteria.
