MDEQ: Contaminated site no threat to nearby homes

Plymouth residents who live near a contaminated site that once housed the former Bathey Manufacturing Co. can apparently take a deep breath and not worry that it might make them sick.

A new environmental report found no off-site migration of contaminants such as TCE, or trichloroethylene, a solvent that can pose health risks if it becomes airborne and seeps into homes, a Michigan Department of Environmental Quality geologist said.

The report indicates "there is nothing migrating off the site and threatening residents in their homes," MDEQ geologist Brandon Alger said.

His remarks came after he received an off-site migration assessment report from PM Environmental, Inc., based on independent tests of soil, groundwater and soil gas on property where Bathey once made industrial baskets to hold auto parts while they were plated or chemically tested. It closed about 30 years ago.
