Big dig coming soon to clean up Albany's Quackenbush Square
Soil removal next step in 3-building Quackenbush plan

Albany - A long-awaited environmental cleanup next to one of the city's most historic areas — Quackenbush Square — will begin soon with the excavation of more than 30,000 cubic yards of soil.
The remediation is related to a Brownfield Cleanup Program application submitted by the land's new developer, Pioneer Companies of Syracuse, that has proposed a mixed-use development around 705 Broadway that would connect downtown Albany with other redevelopment projects happening in the city's warehouse district.
In January, Pioneer officials presented a plan to city planners that showed three buildings, each one rising as high as nine stories, that would house retail, housing and a hotel at the corner of Broadway and Spencer Street.
