Red Bluff - The Pacific Gas and Electric Company’s cleanup project near the Sacramento River was delayed slightly due to the wet winter, but the project has started back up with crews removing the contaminated soil left behind by the former manufactured gas plant in the early 1900s.

The cleanup at 600 Rio St. is expected to continue through the fall, said Paul Moreno, PG&E media representative.

Work at the site is progressing, Moreno said. Crews have excavated a portion of the property, primarily along the north side of the lot, and have taken out some trees and shrubs in the area.

Cleanup of the site, which is owned by PG&E, will provide long-term protection of public health and the environment as some byproducts of the gas-making process were left buried at the site.
