> This half-day workshop will be focused on finding practical evidence-based solutions to help RCRA facilities meet their near- and long-term obligations under USEPA’s RCRA cleanup program. The Chlorinated Vapor Intrusion (CVI) pathway has been identified as a ‘barrier’ to meeting RCRA cleanup goals, such as enduring Final Remedy Decisions, for numerous reasons. These reasons include the limited resources/oversight for initial and long-term monitoring. To address this ‘barrier’, we are focusing on practical means to help validate expectations and improve the long-term reliability of proposed CVI decisions with the minimum amount of costly sampling, e.g., through the increased use of Hypothesis Testing. The following are some examples of Hypothesis Testing this workshop will address to help minimize the number of costly indoor air samples needed:
> ·         Testing sample representativeness - Using existing statistical methods adapted for CVI samples (indoor air, soil gas and vapor sources) – Presentation and panel discussion of an outlined draft:
> o   Statistical Toolbox for RCRA CVI Decisions
> ·         Statistical testing of the relationship between target (CVOC) compounds and indicators/ tracers/surrogates, including new results from a ‘data-rich’ study in UT
> ·         Improving the odds of sample representativeness (across space and time.) Presentation and panel discussion of an outlined draft:
> o   Indicators, Tracers & Surrogates Toolbox for RCRA CVI Decisions
> ·         Validation testing of vapor control technologies – Review of indoor air treatment units & new ORD research on area-wide mitigation via soil vapor extraction (SVE)
> ·         Update on matching the nature of the risk, the mitigation method effectiveness needed, and the rigor and duration of follow-up monitoring (including consideration of surrogates)
