ENKA, N.C. - A legal challenge over a former Enka industrial landfill that is being transformed into a public recreation space has been settled.
The state's Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ)and MountainTrue, a local environment group, have agreed to move forward with plans to turn the former BASF plant into a park with greenways, ballfields and a concession area.
This comes after MountainTrue challenged a brownfields agreement which allows abandoned properties previously called contaminated to be redeveloped.
Under the agreement, the DEQ will include the latest environmental sampling results from the site with the Register of Deeds.
