Geologist warns New Hanover quarry monitoring won't be enough

NEW HANOVER - The state will require Gibraltar Rock to sample and
test for chemical contaminants in the water drawn into the company’s
proposed quarry off Route 73.
In an April 21 letter to the company, the Pennsylvania Department of
Environmental Protection wrote that both the surface water and the
groundwater collected during quarry operations "shall be tested for
VOCs."
VOCs stands for "volatile organic compounds" and is part of an
alphabet soup of pollutants that includes vinyl chloride;
trichloroethylene or TCE; methyl tertiary butyl ether or MTBE; 1,4
dioxane methyl ethyl ketone or MEK and 1,2-dichloroethene or DCE.
Those are the primary pollutants found in well samples, and in some
neighboring residential wells, believed to have leached off the
former Good’s Oil site on Layfield Road, which is adjacent to land
Gibraltar Rock wishes to quarry.
