More than $2.2 million in loans and a grant have been awarded to help redevelop the site of the former McLouth Steel Corp. plant in Gibraltar, Michigan Department of Environmental Quality officials said Tuesday.

The funding for the Detroit/Wayne County Port Authority is for the Ferrous Cal Co. redevelopment project. The work at the plant includes removal of contaminated materials.

Ferrous Cal plans to invest $53 million to upgrade the plant, which has been idle for more than a decade, and property to produce steel for automotive companies in the region, Crain's reported in April. It will redevelop the former steel mill into a state-of-the-art facility for annealing, a process that involves heating metal or glass to increase its strength.

The company anticipates the new facility will create more than 100 new jobs.
