LOWER PROVIDENCE - The board of supervisors Thursday approved a plan for a 139-townhouse development at River Road and Germantown Pike, despite concerns from the public about trichloroethylene contamination in the area.
TCE, a colorless liquid used mainly as a solvent, was found in the soil northeast corner of the property near the Superior Tube plant. Part of the development plan to deal with the contamination involves installing a 2-foot soil cap and fencing around the area and prohibiting the use of well water on the property.
Additionally, Christopher Canavan, the senior vice president of the builder, W.B. Homes Inc., said although the solvents can evaporate, the houses will have a vapor barriers.
Several members of the public at Thursday’s hearing did not appear to be satisfied with these precautions, even though Canavan said the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection reviewed and approved them.
