Groundwater cleanup of Whittaker-Bermite site could begin this year

The pumps, pipes and cleaning machinery needed to decontaminate groundwater on Santa Clarita Valley’s toxic Whittaker-Bermite site is expected to be up and running within the year, state officials said this week.
Construction needed to put the infrastructure in place — such as pipes and pumps — could take about 10 months to complete once the Santa Clarita issues permits for the work, said Russ Edmondson, spokesman for the state’s Department of Toxic Substances Control.
A planning official with the city said Monday he expects to issue the necessary grading permits within the next two weeks.
