A brownfield plan in the amount of $226,153 was approved Monday by the Birmingham City Commission to clean up any underground contamination at the former Citgo gas station at 33588 Woodward Avenue.
Duane Barbat, of Barbat Properties, plans to redevelop the site into a Shell Gas Station with an indoor Dunkin Donuts store. The company plans to spend an estimated $1 million on the new station, along with hiring five full-time employees and two part-time workers to run the 24-hour operation.
The property is located at the northeast corner of Woodward and Chapin and a gas station has operated there since 1950. Barbat plans to expand the building footprint by about 1,000 square feet for the Dunkin Donuts. Plus, he’s installing new gas pumps and canopy, lighting, new signage, screening and landscaping.
