Brownfield project paying off for Bridgeport

TRUMBULL - With buildings finally going up on once-contaminated 
industrial sites in Bridgeport and other municipalities, programs 
adopted more than a decade ago to clean up polluted property are finally 
paying off.

That's what a panel of experts on environmental laws, regulations and 
development told more than 30 people Wednesday during a Bridgeport 
Regional Business Council forum at the Trumbull Marriott about 
brownfield projects. Despite the good news, some panelists said they're 
concerned state and federal bureaucracy, as well as lawsuits, are 
getting in the way of further development. A brownfield is land that is 
underutilized because of contamination or the perception of 
contamination, according to the panelists.

It takes patience, time and money to complete these projects, according 
to Edward Lavernoich, Bridgeport's deputy director of planning and 
economic development. He pointed to the old Bryant Electric site on 
State Street as an example.
