Without knowing exactly where to look, environmental workers are
scheduled to begin the latest phase of a sweeping search for
subterranean trichloroethylene pollution in the Town of Union next week.
The plan calls for using drill rigs to collect soil gas and ground water
samples in an area generally bordered by the Susquehanna River to the
south, Boswell Hill Road to the west and north, and Nanticoke Drive to
the east. Much of the work, scheduled to begin Monday, will be done on
sidewalks and public rights of way in West Corners and West Endicott,
according to a letter from Department of Environmental Conservation
engineer Sally Dewes.
The search -- called the "Endicott area-wide study" -- began in 2003
after the chemical was found entering properties through a process
called vapor intrusion south of the former IBM Corp. plant on North
Street. It has since been extended to include any and all sources of the
pollution in an area encompassing about 6 square miles.
