TOXIC-CLOUD NIGHTMARE

A pollution dump that once sent a green, toxic cloud wafting toward a 
Long Island village is still a potential health threat, officials 
charged yesterday after indicting the owner.

Gerald Cohen, 72, owner of Lawrence Aviation Industries in Port 
Jefferson Station, was arrested Thursday on a federal criminal 
indictment charging him with illegally storing more than 11 tons of 
corrosive, hazardous waste at his business. Noxious vapors could seep 
into nearby homes and a local high school, officials said.

Inspectors for the EPA - who are proposing a $24 million cleanup project 
to end the threat - have tested the basements of Port Jefferson HS and 
25 private homes but have not yet found any toxic fumes.
