A state legislative committee heard hours of testimony Wednesday about
the failure of government at all levels to stop a former thermometer
factory from operating as a day-care center for more than two years.

The state Assembly Environment and Solid Waste Committee conducted a
daylong hearing in the Delsea Regional High School auditorium. The
hearing drew more than 100 residents and parents of children who
attended Kiddie Kollege, as well as environmentalists, attorneys and
local officials.

Kiddie Kollege's owners voluntarily shut down the center in July after
high levels of mercury were found inside the building on Delsea Drive.
Although local, county, state and federal officials were aware the site
was contaminated, no one prevented Kiddie Kollege from opening in early
2004.
